Measurement and distribution of travel times and traffic intensity in Brabant

In September 2007 the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands started construction of a network of over 300 intelligent measurement systems along the roads of the province. The measurement systems determine the traffic intensity and the travel times on main routes for the driver.

The province of North Brabant (www.brabant.nl) works hard on a better accessibility for traffic on the national highways in the province as well as the provincial roads. To achieve this target the province is putting the so called Bravissimo measurement system into operation. Bravissimo collects traffic data with camera’s and uses this data to calculate the travel times and traffic intensity on the road network. With this information road users will be faster and more accurately informed. Travel times and route information will for example be shown on Dynamic Route Information Panels (so called DRIPs) and Graphic Route Information Panels (GRIPs). More methods for distribution of the information will follow soon.

To be clear: the Bravissimo cameras do not measure the speed of individual vehicles and are not used to fine overspeeding drivers. The system does not store images of individual vehicles, nor any other personal information.

The province of North Brabant has signed a contract with ARS Traffic & Transport Technology (www.ars.nl) for the supply and exploitation of the Bravissimo measurement system. ARS T&TT is specialised in this innovative measurement methodology. Comparable solutions have been installed by ARS T&TT in several cities and provinces in The Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.
